A Note From Our President
Dear Relatives and Friends of the Alphonse Gerwing Charitable Foundation,
I want to wish you a blessed and peace-filled Christmas and a happy, healthy and prosperous 2014.
The Alphonse Gerwing Charitable Foundation has been in existence for around ten years now. The net worth at the end of November, 2013 has diminshed slightly (to a little under $500,000) as the Foundation, along with all investors, feels the effects of uncertainty in world markets. However our investments have done quite well in the past couple of years after surviving the severe downturn in 2008. To date the Foundation has disbursed $188,000, mostly through the Rainbow of Hope for Children which then uses the money to fund projects in Brazil that Al had agreed to support. This year, we will be able to donate around $17,000.00 to help the poor in north-east Brazil.
I encourage each of you to consider becoming a donor to the Foundation. Your donation adds to the principal value of the Foundation. Only the earnings are used to fund projects each year so all contributons continue to "give" year after year. The Foundation is really a local charity as all of the directors are Al's relatives and volunteer their services. As a result there is no "bureaucracy" (Al would be proud of this) and all of the earnings go directly to the designated projects initiated by Al before he passed away. The projects: Rural Women Workers and Fisherwomen of Alagoas, Village opportunitiesin Alagoas and the School of Family Agriculture in Bahia.
You can make a donation by cheque or through any of the options listed below. Another option to consider is a "direct deposit". Direct deposit enables a donor to make a regular donation each month by having the donation transferred to the Foundation automatically. If you are interested in either of these options please contact our treasurer, Ted Gerwing at (306)374-9771 or by email at
Once again, best wishes to each of you. Thank you for your support of Al's Foundation. I encourage you to consider the Alphonse Gerwing Charitable Foundation as one of your 'charities of choice' for this coming year.
Steve Buttinger, Chairperson
Alphonse Gerwing Charitable Foundation
Our hope
As you know, the purpose of the Foundation is to keep Al’s projects (and memory) alive long into the future.
You can help
By contributing to the foundation, you can help to ensure that Al’s work will continue to make a difference in people’s lives.
Ways to give
Gifts can be in a variety of forms including one or more of the following:
Gifts of cash are the most familiar way to contribute.
Wills and Bequests
You can make an enduring gift to the Alphonse Gerwing Charitable Foundation through your will as a bequest. A bequest could involve cash, stocks, real estate or other property and is usually a percentage of the residue of your estate, which is given after your family needs are cared for. There are also tax benefits for making a charitable contribution through a bequest or life insurance policy. In preparing your will and any bequest, it is important to consult a lawyer and accountant or estate planner to ensure that your will achieves what you would like to accomplish.
Other forms of gifts
- publicly traded securities
- RRSP, RRIF, pension or annuity proceeds
- Charitable remainder trust
- Life insurance policy
Each of these types of donations is recognized by Revenue Canada and have tax and estate planning advantages.

I am saddened to announce that one of our directors and a person repsonsible for the idea of starting this Foundation, Wally (Ewald) Gerwing, passed away in October 2012. It was Wally who first approached me about orgainizing a Foundation in Al's name in order to carry on his work. Thanks to his and his sister Marina Lawrence's foresight and initiative, the seeds for the Foundation were sown. I am happy to report that Marina, the co-generator of the idea of this Foundation has agreed to take Wally's place as a director. Also, Charlie Matt, who is looking after this Foundation website, has agreed to serve as a director.
“Remember that when you leave this earth, you can take with you nothing that you received- only what you have given; a full heart enriched by honest service, love, sacrifice and courage.”
