WELCOME TO THE APLHONSE GERWING FOUNDATION WEBSITE
A Note From Our President
Dear Relatives and Friends of the Alphonse Gerwing Charitable Foundation,
I want to wish you a blessed and peace-filled Christmas and a happy, healthy and prosperous 2015. As we enter a new year it is time again to give a progress report on the Foundation.
Our Foundation is currently supporting three projects in north-east Brazil that Al was instrumental in forming and funding. These projects are:
- The School of Family Agriculture
- Grota de Alegria (Grotto of Joy)
- Education and Citizenship
- Rural Women and Fisherwomen of Alagoas
Some of the ongoing needs of these programs are as follows:
- Develop land for growing vegetables
- Install irrigation for growing crops
- Purchase farm equipment (planters, fertilizer applicators, wheelbarrows)
- Provide counselling, workshops and seminars for women and youth at risk of substance abuse, violence and prostitution
- Hold workshops on skill development to enhance employability
- Provide materials and training in music and sports activities
- Provide literacy and computer training
As you can see, there are many continuing needs in the projects that Al started. I encourage each of you to consider becoming part of the Foundation. Your donation adds to the principal value of the Foundation. The earnings are used to fund projects each year so all contributons continue to "give" year after year. If you are interested in making a donation please go to the "Donation" section on this website.
We at the Foundation are excited to announce the book launch of No Ordinary Man: The Memoirs of Alphonse Gerwing. At the encouragement of his relatives, Al began to write his memoirs a few years ago. However, his illness prevented him from completing the project.
Al's niece, Connie Gerwing agreed to take on the task of finishing and publishing the memoirs, and the book has recently been released. If you would like a copy, it is available through the McNally Robinson website, or from the contact on the Al's Store section on this website. It is a most enjoyable, heartwarming and inspiring read. I strongly recommend it. We owe a debt of gratitude to Connie for the completion of this labour of love.
Once again, best wishes to each of you. Thank you for your support of Al's Foundation. I encourage you to consider the Alphonse Gerwing Charitable Foundation as one of your 'charities of choice' for this coming year.
Steve Buttinger, Chairperson
Alphonse Gerwing Charitable Foundation
As you know, the purpose of the Foundation is to keep Al’s projects (and memory) alive long into the future.
